Best Robot Cleaner for Above Ground Pools – Ultimate Guide and Reviews

The first summer I got my above-ground pool installed, I was looking for an easy way to maintain it. I already own a robot vacuum and definitely wanted my pool cleaner to be automated too.

However, I knew very little about robotic pool cleaners and wasn’t sure which one was best. So, I spent hours and hours reading reviews and comparing features. Still, I wasn’t able to find one specifically designed for a rounded above ground pool.

Since I couldn’t afford to buy more than one brand and didn’t want to go through the hassle of returning the ones I didn’t like. I was lucky enough to find some of the most popular models available for rent locally.

After using them throughout the summer and comparing the results, I am more than happy to share my findings with you.

Reviews of my favorite Robot Pool Cleaners

Choosing the right automatic pool cleaner for above ground pools may not be an easy task, but isn’t that what reviews are for? We’ve done the research, so you don’t have to. Take a look at our top 3 models and decide which one is the most effective and practical for your situation.

1. Dolphin Nautilus CC Robotic Pool Cleaner

I enjoy two things in my free time, reading and swimming. When the weather’s nice, you can find me either soaking up some sun or relaxing in my pool.

Over the years, I’ve probably gone through 4-5 different types of pool cleaners trying to find one that was both efficient and easy enough to work at my age.

Let me tell you, when I finally tried the Dolphin Nautilus CC Robotic Pool Cleaner, I knew that I had found just what I was looking for!

The first time I set it out to clean my pool, it only took about 2 hours to do its job, and when I went out back to check on it, the pool was already sparkling clean! No more having to worry about trying to find someone who can take care of my pool for me, no manually vacuuming it out every weekend.

If you own an above-ground pool and are looking to save time or money, this is definitely the robot cleaner for you.

What I liked:

The dolphin nautilus cc is both efficient and easy to work. Its ultra-quiet motor ensures that you can go about your regular business without worrying about disturbing the neighbors. It has a wide cleaning path, allowing it to clean an entire pool in under 2 hours. The caddy cart makes it easy to wheel around for basic drop-off and retrieval.

The caddy cart included with this model is a real lifesaver for above-ground pools. It comes in handy when unloading and loading the robot into storage. Also, the rechargeable battery will last for up to 4 hours of continuous operation and comes with a charger included!

What I didn’t like:

As far as robotic pool cleaners go, this one is pretty good. The only downside I’ve found is that it sometimes gets stuck under the ladder.

2. Aiper Smart Cordless Automatic Pool Cleaner

I hate cleaning my pool almost as much as I hate mowing the lawn, but Aiper has come out with a robotic pool cleaner that makes this tedious task more bearable.

The Aiper Smart Cordless Automatic Pool Cleaner is designed to clean residential swimming pools up to 100 ft²/10m² in about an hour, including in-ground and above ground pools with flat floors.

This is a self-contained unit, making it lightweight and easy to handle. It requires no messy cords. The only task required of you is to empty debris from the filter bag after use.

Thanks to its large battery capacity and intelligent charging technology, this robotic pool cleaner can run up to 90 minutes without stopping. It won’t charge automatically, but it will park close to the pool wall, so you can easily pick it up and charge it yourself.

Another impressive feature is that thanks to its smart scanning system and adequate suction power, this little wonder can easily clean areas that other pool cleaners may miss or be unable to enter.

In conclusion, Aiper has been doing a fantastic job with this new line of robotic pool cleaners, and I actually enjoy cleaning my pool now!

3. Paxcess Cordless Robotic Pool Cleaner

I have been pleased with my purchase of the Paxcess cordless robotic pool cleaner. It has been a huge time saver for me, especially now that I have knee problems, and bending over to clean the pool takes a toll on my aching joints.

I was pleased to find out that it can be easily programmed to run every day or once a week and it cleans the pool very well! I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a dependable robotic pool cleaner.

The energy-saving mode makes it eco-friendly and allows it to run for about 6 hrs. on a single charge. It uses water pressure that propels the unit through your pool which saves on electricity. My kids were fascinated with the design, and it floats, so I don’t have to worry about my boys playing with it in the pool.

Although the Paxcess robot pool vacuum cleans really well, it isn’t as good as the Dolphin at climbing up the walls of my above-ground pool. It is also challenging to get off of the pool floor when it gets stuck. I would recommend this product, but customers should keep in mind that it does have some limitations.

Different Types of Pool Vacuums

There are three types of devices that can clean your above ground pool automatically. Depending on your situation, one might suit you better than the other.

Here’s an explanation of the different types of Pool Vacuums;

Suction Pool Cleaner- Suction pool vacuums are the most common type of robotic pool cleaners. They work by pulling water and debris through a hose and into a filter bag. Suction models tend to be cheaper, but they have some disadvantages as well.

A suction vacuum cleaner cannot dig deep into your pool’s bottom or climb over obstacles like stairs, ladders, or rocks. Suction models are also more prone to getting clogged with debris during operation and require you to clean a filter bag regularly.

Pressure Pool Cleaners- Pressure pool cleaners use power to draw more significant amounts of water and debris through a hose into your filter bag. That allows them to handle large debris like leaves or even sand.

Pressure vacuums also come equipped with wheels that enables them to climb over obstacles and a more powerful suction system that won’t clog your filter during operation.

Pressure pool cleaners are more expensive but come with plenty of benefits. They allow you to keep your above-ground pool spotless, which can save you a lot of time and effort.

Robotic Pool Cleaners- Suction and pressure pool cleaners work manually, while robotic cleaners function automatically. They are operated by a timer that turns them on at specified times or when the filter bag gets full, and you don’t need to be there for them to start cleaning.

Robotic models also come with an extra filtration system that removes fine dust, dirt, and debris from the water like a remote pool cleaner.

Here’s Our Guide to Maintain Your Robot Pool Cleaner!

Benefits of Using a Robot to Clean An Above Ground Pool

Many homeowners underestimate the amount of time and effort it takes to maintain an above-ground pool. While some homeowners enjoy the weekly task of keeping their pool, others view it as an unnecessary burden. If you fall into this latter category, a robot pool cleaner might be the perfect solution for you.

Here are 6 benefits to owning a robot to clean your above ground pool:

1) They Clean More Efficiently: Most swimming pool cleaning robots are programmed to vacuum and scrub a pool within two hours. In comparison, it could take one person up to four hours to scrub and vacuum a pool by hand. Robots can also get to hard-to-reach places without much effort, such as steps and under ladders.

2) Reduce Physical Labor: This makes it great for the elderly, disabled, or anyone with mobility problems. Many of us require a pool to help with physical therapy or to improve our overall health. And cleaning it by hand might not be an option for many. With an automatic robot pool vacuum, cleaning chores will be taken care of with minimal effort from you.

3) Requires Less Harsh Chemicals: You can either clean your above-ground pool manually or by using large amounts of chemicals. However, chemicals can be difficult to store and harmful if misused. Harsh chemicals, such as chlorine tablets and muriatic acid, will irritate our skin and eyes. Using a robot to clean an above ground pool is a safer and more sanitary solution.

4) Saves You Money: Caring for an above ground pool requires many tools such as brushes, vacuums, scrubbers, pumps, and chemicals. By replacing all other cleaning tools with a robotic cleaner and reducing your use of harsh chemicals, you could save up to $200 or more each time you clean your pool!

5) Time Saving: One of the most significant advantages of a pool cleaning robot is that it will save you time. Instead of fumbling around with a skimmer, hoses, and chemicals all day, you can relax with your family or get some extra sleep while your robot does its job. If you don’t have any free time to clean your pool, a robot is an excellent investment.

6) Keeps the Pool Clean: It’s a lot of work to scrub an above ground pool. The less it’s used, the more it will need to be cleaned. Newer robot pool cleaners can be set to clean the pool automatically via an app or remote control. This is especially useful for people who have busy schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a round-up of the most commonly asked questions I looked into while searching for my pool robot.

Can you use ANY robotic pool cleaner for an above-ground pool?

Suppose you’re like me and have an above-ground pool. In that case, there aren’t many robotic cleaners specifically designed for above-ground use, and finding the right one was difficult. But rest assured, you can safely use any robot pool cleaner for your above ground pool, no matter the shape.

During my search, I constantly ran into robot cleaners designed specifically for inground pools. I wondered if they would work with above ground ones.

There are some minor differences regarding cleaning performance and robot features depending on the shape and size of your pool. Still, all robot pool cleaners are virtually interchangeable.

What’s the difference between above ground pool vacuum robot and an inground?

Besides being smaller, robotic pool cleaners designed for above-ground pools have independent suction while in-ground ones rely on your pool pump. And since they are smaller in size, they won’t be able to keep up with vacuuming larger inground pools.

Which type of pool cleaner is best for an above ground pool?

Robotic cleaners have become popular because they work more efficiently than other types of automatic pool vacuum. Suction and pressure models spend most of their time going in circles, so they don’t provide thorough cleaning of your swimming pool.

On the contrary, robotic devices use suction and filter systems to clean all sides of the pool and are great at collecting fine dust, dirt, and debris. Many automated models also come with a remote control that allows you to start or stop them while sitting around your swimming pool.

There are several brands and types of automatic pool cleaners available on the market. Suction and pressure models work similarly but have their own characteristics.

Suction robotic cleaners are mostly less expensive, but they are not good at climbing over obstacles or cleaning walls and corners of your pool.

Pressure robotic cleaners are more expensive because of their stronger suction power. Still, they can climb over rocks and clean the bottom better than other models.

Conclusion

Cleaning an above ground pool can be a lot of work. It’s more than scrubbing and vacuuming the walls. You also have to maintain it with chemicals to keep algae from growing in the water.

Robotic cleaners will clean your pool more efficiently without getting tired or complaining. They reduce the amount of chemicals, so they’re safer around children and pets too! And suppose you don’t want to spend time cleaning it yourself.

In that case, robots are programmed to clean automatically when needed via remote control app access – which means no extra effort is required for busy people like you.
